Breast Needle Localization

Ultrasound-Guided Core Needle Breast Biopsy

An ultrasound machine is used to locate the mass which cannot be palpated on physical exam. The area over the mass is then injected with a local anesthetic to prevent pain. A tiny stab wound is made in the skin. A large caliber biopsy needle is then passed into the breast tissue using the ultrasound for guidance. When the needle is up against the mass, a trigger is pulled to fire the biopsy devise which goes in and out of the mass removing a core of tissue. This mass is sampled 3 to 4 times on slightly different angles to get representative samples which are then sent to the pathologist.
